Struggling to find funding to attend SCAR 2020? Then have a look at the APECS or SCAR websites for a number of funding opportunities available to attend the conference. Below a few opportunities are listed as well.

AnT-ERA (apply by 2 March)

AnT-ERA is offering travel support for early-career researchers (ECRs) to attend SCAR2020. The grant will be a maximum of $ 2,000 USD to cover travel, accomodation and registration costs. Please send your application to Julian Gutt (Julian.Gutt@awi.de) with the following information:

  • Description of your ECR status.
  • Estimated required travel and registration support.
  • A note of other sources of funding that will be supporting your travel to SCAR2020.
  • Your submitted abstract that you will present on topics relevant to AnT-ERA, focusing on biological processes, which are primarily but not necessarily climate-relevant.

AntClim21 (apply by 2 March)

AntClim21 would like to announce that they will be offering grants to support travel for early-career researchers (ECRs) planning to attend SCAR2020. These will be a maximum of $ 2,000 USD to help with travel and registration costs and are specifically for ECRs. To apply please send an email to Tom Bracegirdle (tjbra@bas.ac.uk) with the following information:

  • A description and/or evidence of your ECR status.
  • Estimated required travel and registration support.
  • A note of other sources of funding that will be supporting your travel to SCAR2020.
  • Your submitted abstract as evidence that you will present on topics relevant to AntClim21, for example relating to Antarctic and/or Southern Ocean climate change with a focus on 21st century climate projections, model evaluation or using paleo-observations and modelling to help improve projections.

ANTPAS (apply by 15 March)

Antarctic Permafrost, Periglacial Environments and Soils (ANTPAS) is offering 3 grants of $ 1,000 USD each for Emerging Career Researchers to attend the upcoming 9th SCAR OSC, which will be held in Hobart, Australia from 3-7 August 2020. To apply, send your CV and submitted abstract (specifying proposed poster or oral presentation as submitted to session 12G) to the ANTPAS Chairs Mauro Guglielmin (mauro.guglielmin@uninsubria.it) and Marc Oliva (marcoliva@ub.edu). The deadline for applications is 15 March.

ImPACT (apply by 2 March)

ImPACT is offering travel support for PhD students planning to attend SCAR2020. Travel grants will be for a maximum sum of $ 2,000 USD towards travel and registration costs. To apply, please send an email to Susan Bengtson Nash (s.bengtsonnash@griffith.edu.au) with the following information:

  • A description of your PhD project, including areas of alignment with the goals of ImPACT.
  • Estimated required travel and registration support.
  • A note of other sources of funding that will be supporting your travel to SCAR2020.
  • Your submitted abstract.

PAIS (apply by 2 March)

PAIS is offering grants of a maximum of $ 2,000 USD to help with travel and registration costs for ECRs to attend the upcoming SCAR2020. To apply please send an email to Tim Naish (Timothy.Naish@vuw.ac.nz) or Laura De Santis (ldesantis@inogs.it) by 2 March with the following information:

  • A description and/or evidence of your ECR or student status.
  • Estimated required travel and registration support.
  • A note of other sources of funding that will be supporting your travel to SCAR2020.
  • Your submitted abstract as evidence that you will present on topics relevant to PAIS.

PolSciNex (apply by 9 March)

The Action Group on PoLSciNex is offering travel grant of $ 1,000 USD each to ECRs makeing a research presentation at SCAR2020 Session 44 on “Connecting legal and policy needs with Antarctic research”. To apply, please send an email to Akiho Shibata with the following information:

  • A description and/or evidence of your ECS or student status;
  • Your submitted abstract as evidence that you will present in Session 44; and
  • Estimated required travel and registration fees to attend the OSC.

SC-HASS (apply by 9 March)

The Standing Committee on the Humanities and Social Sciences (SC-HASS) is offering grants of a maximum of $ 1,000 USD to cover travel and accommodation for ECRs attending the upcoming SCAR2020 OSC.  In addition, the SCAR OSC registration costs for successful applicants will be covered by SC-HASS. Please send your application to the SC-HASS chief officers (antarcticassag@gmail.com) with the following information:

  • Description of your ECR status.
  • Estimated travel costs.
  • An identification of other sources of funding that will be supporting your travel to SCAR2020.
  • Your submitted abstract that you will present on SC-HASS topics.

SERCE (apply by 2 March)

The SCAR/SERCE program (‘Solid Earth Response and influence on Cryospheric Evolution’) is offering travel support of up to $ 2,000 USD to attend SCAR2020. Early career researchers, or researchers from countries with an emerging Antarctic program, who are working in a SERCE-facing area are eligible to apply for funds to support their attendance at the conference. The deadline to apply for funds is the Monday after the abstract deadline (abstract deadline is 28 February). Applicants must be the presenting author on a submitted abstract. To apply please send an email to pippa.whitehouse@durham.ac.uk with the following information:

  • The year you attained your PhD or highest qualification (briefly document any time away from research);
  • Estimated required travel and registration support;
  • Other sources of funding that will be supporting your travel to SCAR2020;
  • Your submitted abstract, on which you must be the named presenter;
  • A brief description of how your abstract fits with SERCE objectives (see SERCE main page).
